In Piano 1, I have made much more progress than I would've imagined in a 9-week period. Before this class, I had only played the keyboard a few times in a middle school music class. I was in concert band for five years, so I knew how to read music in the treble clef, but the bass clef was foreign to me. At first, it was a challenge to use both of my hands at once while reading two different staves as well. The pace of the class worked very well for me, because it allowed me time to get used to the technique of reading and playing piano music.
As the class went on, being assigned new pieces of music became easier to handle. I adapted to the method of practicing one hand at a time before combining them. I also found that I learned best when I played one thing over and over, not moving on until I could play it without mistakes. I think that one of the problems I ran into, however, was my tendency to memorize the song--or at least, what I thought the song sounded like. If I thought I knew the tune of a song, I would accidentally skip over certain notes and play it how I remembered it, not how it was written. This is something I'll just have to be mindful of in the future.
Overall, I am pleased with the progress I made in this class. I've wanted to be able to play piano for a while, but never got around to learning. I used to print off sheet music of songs that I knew, but I was mostly memorizing where to put my fingers, not actually learning piano. Before, I didn't have the right technique to start out without being formally taught. Now, I feel that I have a strong enough base to work off of in my own time.
